The Walkirios: Walking in Jesus

The Walkirios group was founded on July 9, 1968-69, with the mission to form a cultural, social, and Christian group, in which the young people of the community could form an identity for themselves in this society. The Walkirios group always sings on Sunday morning at the 9:30 a.m. mass, and also participates in other special celebrations.

We want to thank God for giving us the opportunity to know him and for changing our lives. We also want our music to fill everyone with joy and peace. Our group wants to take this opportunity to thank the entire Ascension church community, for their support in helping us remain an integral part of this community. Our music consists of a wide variety of Latin sounds. Our instruments are the guitar, the bass, drums, the guiro and others. The group meets every Wednesdays after the 7:00 p.m. mass. Everyone is welcome to visit us in our rehearsal. We hope that our voices continue signing to praises the Lord. God bless you all!

A Proclamation from the Parish Council

PROCLAMATION: LET IT BE KNOWN that the Parish Council of the Church of the Ascension on West 107 Street in Manhattan, New York today wishes to honor and celebrate a special part of our community–the Walkirios.

Founded in July 1968, its original mission was to provide a cultural, social, and Christian group, in which the young people of the community could form an identity and a place for themselves in this society. For forty years, Walkirios has faithfully fulfilled its mission and enriched our community with passionate, prayerful Latin music at our 9:30 am Sunday Mass. In doing so, its members have indeed made a place for themselves - in the hearts of our parishioners.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to attend the 9:30 am Mass have been deeply moved by the skill and joy that the singers, guitar players, bassists, drummers and guiro-players bring to our prayer life. Thanks to the members of Walkirios, our Eucharist cannot help but be a time of joy and beauty. Those members of our parish who attend other Masses are always surprised and inspired to hear the Walkirios when we gather as a larger community during Holy Week and on our parish feast of Ascension Thursday. No one who hears the music of Walkirios can ever forget it. It is a testament to the men and women who have so deeply enriched our parish life that so many of them are with us today to celebrate the 40th birthday of Walkirios. They have truly followed the Lord's prompting to be "the salt that flavors the earth," and their flavor has helped to make the Church of the Ascension the faith-filled community that it is today.

Congratulations to the former and current members of Walkirios! We wish you forty more years of joy, peace, prayer and music!

Nadie que escuchar la música de los walkirios, la puede olvidar.

Es un testimonio a los hombres y mujeres que han enriquecido tan profundamente, nuestra vida parroquial que tantos de ellos estén, hoy día, con 40ta cumpleaños de los walkirios. Ellos, verdaderamente, han seguido el impulso del Señor de ser la sal" que le da sabor a la tierra", y su sabor ha ayudado a hacer de la ascension, la comunidad llena de fe, que es, hoy en día.
